In the Spotlight
We are pleased to announce, Shayna Ashley (8th grade from Palm MS) and Leen Sawas (8th grade from Mountain View MS) made the SCSBOA Honor Symphonic Band! They are two MVUSD representatives in the 112 person band. The audition process was a bit different this year. Students had to submit a video recording of themselves playing several major scales, a chromatic scale, and a required solo piece. After a first round audition, students were called in to perform their audition live and were required to sight read.
Shayna Ashley was born in Riverside, California and raised in Moreno Valley, California. Shayna Ashley started playing the euphonium in 2017 when she joined Beginning Band at Palm Middle School under the direction of her teacher, Mr. Matthew Moe. Shayna then auditioned into the Puma Band and has served as the principal euphoniumist for the past two years. Shayna also performed in the Moreno Valley Unified School District elementary and middle school honor bands since 2017. In addition to her musical contributions, Shayna has also served in leadership roles within the band as band treasurer in the 2018-2019 school year and band vice president in the 2019-2020 school year.
Shayna is also very involved and accomplished at Palm Middle School. She made it into the county level National History Day earlier this year, had her science fair project sent to the district level, and was on the winning math league team last school year. Outside of her academics, Shayna also competes on the Victoria Country Club of Riverside’s swim team. Shayna plans on continuing her music education at Canyon Springs High School next year. We are all very proud of Shayna and all of her accomplishments.
Leen was born in Syria. She has only been in the United States for 6 years. Leen is a Tuba/Trombone/Euphonium player. She started her musical journey during her 6th grade year. Leen served as the band president during her 7th grade. During her 6th grade year, she performed in the District Elementary Honor Band, 7th grade she performed with the District Middle School Honor Band. This year she paved new roads in playing with the Crimson Regiment and receiving credit for her time and effort. Outside of her musical achievements, Leen is a gate student who maintains a 4.0 gpa.
