The Moreno Valley Unified School District (MVUSD) is leading the way in student success by encouraging artful healing during the challenging time of uncertainty. Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator Greg Solomon and a team of professional educators have been working on a district-wide initiative, Document Today. The district’s plan is to supply every student with an art kit, provide teacher training for success in the digital realm, and coordinate arts teachers, counselors and professional development specialists to train teachers. The focus of the program is to use the arts for student mental health and to document this historic time period.
The Document Today initiative is an intentional approach encouraging students to use the arts to share their feelings and express how they are coping. Teacher training is provided in every arts discipline and supports integration and utilization of the arts in the social emotional wellness of the student and teacher.
Once artwork is created, students can submit their pieces to a student archive capturing the lived experiences of students during this time.
Through an upcoming social media campaign, MVUSD will expand the reach of Document Today beyond the classroom by encouraging its families and community members to engage with its mission at home. By sharing their expressive works of arts under the hashtag, #MVUSDDocToday, all participants will help establish a digital movement promoting wellness and healing through the arts.
Initiatives like Document Today are essential for students to explore and express their emotional health and create connections with teachers.
